This series of videos below provide an example of how the Mini-Lesson and Guided Reading Observational Protocols are used to plan for explicit, intentional instruction based on formative data.  The mini-lesson and guided reading phases focus on teaching students how to use pictures to clarify meaning or extend their thinking of text all as a means of acheiving deep comprehension.
